Catherine Hayes

Catherine Hayes began her education in music in 2003 when she was 11 years old. Ger Condon was and still is the brass teacher in Clonakilty and it was he who inspired her to play the trumpet. From 2003- 2010 she took lessons from Ger Condon playing the trumpet and cornet. She began to play with Clonakilty Brass Band several months after taking up the trumpet and is still playing with them now. Throughout the years she has played with many musical groups and has been involved in many different projects. These include; Blarney Brass and Reed Band, Fermoy Concert Band, Gleneagle Concert Band, Irish Youth Wind Ensemble, South West Regional Youth Orchestra, Cork Youth Orchestra, County Cork VEC Youth Orchestra, Cork School of Music Symphony Orchestra, Cork School of Music Wind Ensemble, Cork School of Music Jazz Big Band, Cork School of Music Brass Ensemble. She has been involved with musicals; Calamity Jane and The Sound of Music. She has also taken part in student project orchestras with Cork School of Music composers and conductors; ‘Patrick The Story’ by Pierre O’ Reilly, conducted by Conor Palliser and ‘Flight To Freedom’ by Richard Rudkins, conducted by Colm Shinnick. She has won several competitions with different bands.

In 2006 Clonakilty won the South of Ireland Band Championships junior section followed by the National Band Championships junior section in 2009, and in 2011 the intermediate section of the South of Ireland Band Championships. Clonakilty Brass Band has also won several adjudicator awards such as junior musicianship awards, best cornet section, best percussion section and best young musician. With Blarney Brass and Reed Band she has won the senior section of the South of Ireland Band Championships twice in 2010 and 2011. Along with winning these they also won best brass section, best woodwind section, best percussion section, best soloist, best repertoire and best march. She has played with players such as, percussionist James Dunne, euphonium player Gary Curtin, trombone player Eoghan Kelly, trumpet players Danny Healy, Vivienne Johnston and Killian Bannister, saxophonists Bobby Watson and Karl Rooney, and have been conducted by Philip Harper. She played abroad with Clonakilty Brass Band in Waldaschaff, Germany in 2008, and with CSM Jazz Big Band in 2011 in Cologne, Germany.

Currently she is studying to get her BMus degree in CIT Cork School of Music. She is going into her third year of a four year degree. She is currently studying trumpet with Vivienne Johnston and has been since 2010. She has had lessons with Killian Bannister of the National Symphony Orchestra and jazz trumpeter Danny Healy who plays lead trumpet with The Hot House Big Band and is currently playing with The Saw Doctors. Since last September she been teaching junior brass members in Clonakilty, preparing them for either the Junior Band or the Senior Band. She has also been a substitute within the VEC School of Music for Ger Condon teaching in one of the schools in Clonakilty when he was out. At the moment she is hoping to concentrate on teaching and conducting modules in college. She also hopes to take a module in music therapy and community music. She hopes to see herself as a conductor in the future, be it in an orchestra or brass band. She would love to be teaching full time in the next two years be it at home or abroad. After doing a module in college on music therapy and community music she is really interested to take it further and to eventually incorporate what she learns into her own playing, her attitude towards music and its capabilities as a therapy, her future students and working attitude. At the moment she is playing with a Motown Big Band, The Papa Zitas and is also involved in trying to set up a brass quintet with several other fellow brass players. Her dream would be to conduct at the highest level and maybe to eventually complete a conducting Masters abroad somewhere. To conduct a brass band like the Black Dyke Brass Band would be one of her main goals.

Throughout her musical career she has been inspired and mentored by many people, though nobody more than Ger Condon. Clonakilty Brass Band has also inspired her  to do more and to go further in her musical education. People such as Viv Johnston her present teacher have pushed her to do more and more in her playing and have given her the confidence to strive for greater things and to achieve more. Other players that inspire her are Danny Healy, Gary Curtin, Richard Marshall and Paul Duffy.
